Audience

You must consider carefully who your intended audience will be as you begin to plan your event.  Depending on which groups you are planning to target, you will need to research dates and times that are reflective of the attendee time commitments and constraints and ensure that your event content is applicable to your intended audience.

All student-focused events should be inclusive of the entire Rotman community and held at times that are accessible to those students who are fully employed while studying in the MBA/MFin Program.

Alumni as Attendees

In particular when you are inviting alumni, please keep the following in mind:

  • The more targeted your invitation the better. You can target alumni by industry, region, graduation date and in some cases by position titles.  For example, you can target all IT professionals in the GTA who graduated between 1995 and 2005 (approximately 250 alumni).  A typical response rate is approximately 5% of people invited.
  • Before the event, a list of registered alumni attendees should be sent to the Alumni Office so they are aware of which alumni are attending.
  • Most alumni are extremely busy people in high profile positions who balance many priorities and demands on their schedules.
  • Many alumni are involved with the School already – advisory boards, alumni board, Class Champions, mentors, or attending other Rotman events, so they may not be responsive to additional requests.
  • Recent grads are more likely to respond to invitations and requests than senior alums and be looking for networking opportunities themselves.

Land Acknowledgement – should be addressed at the start of all events

“We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.”

Timing Note!

Event booking requests through RWorld must be submitted a minimum of 12 weeks in advance of the proposed event date.
