The Executive Diagnostic Test (EDT) was introduced as a replacement for the the GMAT/GRE for candidates who have an undergraduate degree recognized by the University of Toronto. The EDT focuses on the relevant quantitative areas required for your Executive MBA curriculum. Its purpose is to ensure that you have a smooth transition into the program.

The test has been designed by test development specialists at the University of Toronto with the support of the Rotman Executive MBA faculty. Shortly after writing the EDT you will receive a feedback form that will help you identify and strengthen any areas of weakness before you begin your studies.

The EDT does not presuppose any specific knowledge of business or other content areas, nor does it measure achievement in any particular subject areas. The test does not measure subjective factors important to academic and career success, such as motivation, creativity, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, study skills, or overall success on the job.

By mandating admissions testing, the Rotman School of Management ensures that each class is comprised of the highest quality students with both the necessary skills and motivation to be successful in the program. As the programs involve a significant amount of group work, the testing also ensures that each team is comprised of students who can and will contribute fully to group assignments. Although, it may make the application process longer, the Rotman testing process is one of many elements of our program that contribute to providing you with the best possible learning experience during your Executive MBA.

The Executive Diagnostic Tool (EDT) was developed by the Rotman faculty. It focuses on key quantitative topics that will be used in several MBA courses and requires significantly less preparation time than the GMAT.

The test is comprised of eight to ten mathematical questions, three logical reasoning questions and graphing with a short memorandum. The test takes approximately three hours to write.

General Tips:

We understand that preparing for the EDT can feel daunting at times. We would like to share a few insights that will help you feel more confident in tackling this part of the admissions process and getting you one step closer to starting your Executive MBA program.

  • The EDT was designed to assess your skills and potential as an Executive MBA candidate. It is predictive of success in the program, and helps many Rotman students feel ready to tackle this next stage in their academic and professional journey.
  • You do not need to have a background in math, accounting, finance, or analytics to excel in the quantitative section. With the right approach and preparation, you can ace this section even if it isn’t your forte.
  • Skills improvement comes with practice and exposure to various materials. We encourage you to work through the sample tests, view video tutorials, and attend a live EDT Tutorial session with our experienced tutor. Please reach out to your admissions representative for upcoming tutorial dates.
  • Most candidates set aside a few hours over the course of a few weeks to prepare for and complete their exam.
