General Information

The University of Toronto maintains a Quercus for Students page with basic information about Quercus.

Name Changes

In order to have a preferred name appear in Quercus, students will need to have it changed in ACORN. This can be done in person at the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), which acts as the Registrar Office for this purpose, or via the online Change of Name or Gender Request eForm. Students will need to provide appropriate documentation.

At this time, students do not have the option to go in person to SGS as University building remain closed due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19.

In-Person at 63 St. George Street

  • Fill out the Name change form online.
  • The preferred name will be entered under the First Name field.
  • Present any of the legal documents outlined on the online form.
  • The preferred name does not need to be on any of the legal documents presented.

Online via the Name Change form

  • Sign on to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) portal in order to fill out the Change of Name or Gender Request eForm.
  • Fill out the Name Change form.
  • The preferred name will be entered under the First Name field.
  • The preferred name does not need to be on any of the legal documents presented.
  • Students must upload a notarized copy of their legal document(s).

Students Employed by the University

  • If a student is also a University of Toronto staff member, they can change your display name in Quercus by going to the My.Auth website, typing in their preferred first name, and clicking “Set.”

Important Note About Name Changes and Graduation

  • If a student’s preferred name it is not on their legal identification, they must change it back well ahead of graduation by going through the same process as outlined above.
  • Failure to do so will result in the diploma showing your preferred name which may not match your legal name. Students’ names as they appear on ACORN are the names that will appear on diplomas.
  • If a students name has been changed to something other than their formal legal name, future employers, licensing bodies, student loan issuers, and other educational institutions may require legal proof that the transcripts and diplomas being used are legitimately theirs.
  • Diplomas that require a name change can be replaced at a cost of $80.
