Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) – 2019-20

Purpose & Value of the Award

  • Encourages academic excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels
  • Jointly supported by the Rotman School, Ministry of Ontario and the University of Toronto
  • Held for and paid over two(2) or three (3) consecutive terms:
    • September – December 2019
    • January – April 2020
    • May – August 2020
  • Value: $5,000 per term
  • 5-7 awards to students in the Full-Time and joint MBA programs (JD/MBA, Skoll, MGA/MBA and PharmD/MBA)
  • 3-5 awards to students in the Morning & Evening MBA
  • 1 award to each MFRM, MMA, and MFin programs

Application Eligibility


SGS lists minimum criteria. Graduate units may impose additional criteria to apply, receive, or hold an OGS. Rotman uses the following eligibility criteria.

Legal Status
Rotman’s master’s level OGS are open only to domestic students (status at the time of application):

  • Canadian citizen
  • Permanent resident
  • Protected Person

International competition for PhD candidates only

Program Enrolment
  • Enrolled full-time for the 2018-19 academic year in an eligible program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree at an eligible Ontario institution

  • EMBA, GEMBA, GEMBA-HLS and GDipPA are ineligible programs
  • Prospective students: Students must submit an OGS application to each institution for which they are seeking admission. OGS awards are not transferrable from one university to another. If applying to multiple departments within the U of T, a separate OGS application must be submitted to each department
OSAP Standing
  • Be in good standing with the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and Canada Student Loans(CSL)
  • Applicants who have defaulted on a Canada or Ontario Student Loan, or have failed to make satisfactory repayment on a loan overpayment, are ineligible. Students who have never applied for OSAP are in good standing
  • Students who have never received OSAP are considered in good standing
Minimum Academic Requirements
  • Applicants with two years or less of graduate level studies: Minimum A- (80% or 3.70 GPA or equivalent) average in EACH year completed of the last 2 years of study (10 credit-equivalent)
  • Applicants with more than 2 years of graduate level studies: Minimum A- (80% or 3.70 GPA or equivalent) average from ALL graduate courses completed will be used. Undergraduate marks are not considered, unless there are no marks available at the graduate level
  • All grades available at the time of the deadline will be used

Lifetime Maximums
  • Lifetime maximum of OGS at Master’s level: 2 years
  • Lifetime maximum to hold any Government awards (any level): 6 years
  • “Other government awards“ includes the following:
    • Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology(QEIIGSST) (formerly OGSST)
    • Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS)
    • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
    • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
    • Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR)
    • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)

Conditions to Hold an OGS

  • Must register and remain enrolled as a full-time student in an eligible program for the duration the OGS is held
  • Withdrawal, leave of absence, early completion, or failure to complete the term, will result in repayment of funds received for the incomplete term
  • For the purpose of OGS Full-Time, Morning, Evening MBA, MFin, MFRM, MMA, JD/MBA, MGA/MBA and PharmD programs are all considered full-time studies with 100% course-load
    • EMBA, GEMBA, GEMBA-HLS and GDipPA are ineligible
  • Cannot hold OGS and other government award (see list above) concurrently
  • Should you be successful at more than one governmental award, you may be required to decline others, you cannot defer/delay Rotman OGS
  • ​​Must be in good standing with the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Applicants who have defaulted on a Canada or Ontario Student Loan, or have failed to make satisfactory repayment on a loan overpayment, are ineligible to receive the award. Those with an OSAP restriction may still apply for the OGS. However, if awarded, they must have the restriction cleared within 30 days of notification in order to accept and hold the award
  • ​​May accept research assistantships, part-time teaching positions, or other paid employment that does not affect their status as a full-time graduate student and is commensurate with the graduate unit policies.

Indigenous Scholar Award

The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) has permitted universities to allocate up to two (2) OGS awards exclusively to Indigenous graduate students with the aim to recognize excellence and promote equitable access and participation in the Ontario Graduate Scholarship program by Indigenous applicants.

Graduate students who are Indigenous to Canada (recognized in the Constitution Act, 1982 as a person who identifies with First nations (Status/Non-Status), Métis, or Inuit) and have indicated this status on their OGS application will be eligible to be considered for one of two (2) Ontario Graduate Scholarship Indigenous Scholar Awards and potentially other Indigenous awards offered by the School of Graduate Studies.

Review Process

  • Apply using the OGS online application available via the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) website
  • Applications ranked by the Rotman Awards Committee
  • Award recommendations are forwarded to SGS
  • SGS will notify award recipients on behalf of the Province of Ontario following central OSAP checks; this typically happens in July
