Application Process: What Happens if You Hit the “Submit” Button Before Round 2?

Niki da SilvaA number of aspiring Rotman applicants who missed our early Round deadline this October have been reaching out to the Admissions office in the past few days with the same question: if my application will be ready to submit soon, do I need to wait until the January 7th Round 2 deadline or can I submit early?

I wanted to write a blog post to ensure the message was out to all of our interested applicants – please feel free to submit your application package as soon as it’s complete! You certainly don’t need to wait until the deadline date and if you submit early, we do begin assessing your application as soon as it’s received. The typical turnaround time for candidates who submit off-cycle is about 6 weeks. The benefit of submitting prior to the deadline is that you ‘beat the rush’, your application is reviewed fairly quickly, and you’ll hear back sooner about the admissions interview, which is the next stage in the admissions process for successful applicants.

So, I would never suggest rushing the application process – it is too important! But if you are close to ready, I strongly encourage you to hit the ‘submit’ button and get your application in well before the Holiday Break to beat the January rush.

Good luck!  And don’t hesitate to contact the Admissions office with any questions.  We are happy to help, and can also book a pre-application meeting (in-person, or via Skype) to talk about how your profile and qualifications will compare to our admissions requirements.

  1. Hi Niki,

I started my application well before the Round 1, but due to some work commitments I was not able to submit before Round 1. I believe this could be the reason why I am not seeing any links to submit the video essay response. For me, it is coming up as a traditional 5 essay format, with one 500 word essay and 4 shorter essays.
Can you please guide, if I should start a new application or submit the existing version for which I have already prepared the responses?
Since we still got time, any of the approach to boost my candidacy in Round 2 is fine with me.

    Thanks,
    Herin Ruhela

  2. Yes Herin – this is correct, candidates who had started the previous application process have been ‘grandfathered’ to the former questions. There is no preference from the Admissions Committee so you should submit your existing application since you’ve worked on responses. Best of luck!
