Rotman Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) Committee

Mandate

Reporting directly to the Dean, the Rotman Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee (REDI Committee) monitors the culture, behavior, and policies within the Rotman School, with the goal of sustaining an inclusive, collaborative, and collegial workplace and academic environment, respectful of and embracing all aspects of human diversity. Through consultation, the committee will recommend changes to programs, policies, and practices to support this goal, and will provide oversight and metrics to ensure that proposed changes and initiatives are implemented to the satisfaction of the Dean.

Objectives and Roles

  1. To provide a forum for airing and discussion of existing and emerging issues, gaps, and barriers related to equity, diversity and inclusivity for Rotman students, staff, and faculty; and to explore ways to ensure the full participation and positive experience of all community members.
  2. To provide recommendations on specific programs and initiatives (including institutional structures, practices, processes and systems) to be implemented, revised, or discontinued at the Rotman School.
  3. To work with key stakeholders to gain buy-in and build support around planned program changes and initiatives.
  4. To provide oversight, consultation, feedback and measurement before, during and after the implementation of REDI Committee-related initiatives.

András Tilcsik is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and holds the Canada Research Chair in Strategy, Organizations, and Society at the Rotman School of Management. He is an Associate Editor at Administrative Science Quarterly and a faculty research fellow at the Institute for Gender and the Economy.

His research focuses on organizations, occupations, and work, and he is particularly interested in the causes and consequences of inequality in labor markets and the workplace. This line of his research has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, the American Sociological Review, and the Administrative Science Quarterly and has been recognized with the W. Richard Scott Award for Distinguished Scholarship, the Granovetter Award for Best Article in Economic Sociology, and the ASQ Award for Scholarly Contribution.

At Rotman, András teaches a strategic management elective on organizational failure. His book Meltdown (New York: Penguin Press, 2018), coauthored with Chris Clearfield, is based on this course and explores the enduring insights of organizational sociologist Charles Perrow. Meltdown received the National Business Book Award, the Academy of Management’s George R. Terry Book Award, and the Bracken Bower Prize, and was named one of the books of the year by the Financial Times.

Darrell Bowden is the new Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the Rotman School of Management.

With more than 25 years of social justice, EDI, human rights and career development experience in post-secondary environments, Darrell joined Rotman in July 2022 to lead the School’s EDI strategy. He oversees all efforts that help create a more diverse and welcoming community for students, staff and faculty – one of Rotman’s top priorities in the new Academic Plan.

Together with his team, Darrell’s responsibilities include implementing strategies to improve pathways for students, staff and faculty from underrepresented and marginalized communities to participate in all aspects of life at the School; improving EDI awareness and education initiatives for the Rotman community; and collaborating with faculty to bring various facets of EDI into the curriculum and research activities.

His team also works towards aligning Rotman’s equity efforts with recommendations from U of T’s task forces on anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Asian racism, islamophobia and anti-Semitism.

Previously, he held the position of Executive Director of the Office of the Vice President/Vice Provost Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). In that role, he provided a range of consulting services for faculties and departments through education initiatives that address systemic barriers among the University’s academic and administrative functions.

With his team, he managed the White Privilege Conference Global – Toronto in 2018, a four-day event bringing together students, leaders, academics and keynote speakers to explore challenges with privilege and oppression in Canada. This was the first time this conference was held outside of the United States, with 650 delegates participating in six keynote speakers, 21 preconference institutes and 65 concurrent sessions.

For the last 15 years, Darrell was also the mastermind behind the Viola Desmond Day Ceremony at TMU which recognizes and celebrates the success of Black Women in the TMU community. Awards are given out each year in five categories: Black women who are faculty, staff, TMU students, alumni and local area high school students.

Darrell completed his Master’s in Education in Critical Anti-Racism Studies in Education at OISE at the University of Toronto in 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Dalhousie University and an Honours Diploma in Career and Work Counselling from George Brown College.

Gabriela Kampouris is the Director, Building Operations and Client Services at the Rotman School of Management, Rotman School, at the University of Toronto. With over 25 years of experience in the field of building operations and client services, she has participated in and lead projects and change initiatives focused on creating an accessible and inclusive environment at the Rotman School.
