Microsoft® Office Specialist

Overview

The Rotman FRT-Lab is pleased to offer you access to the online self-paced Microsoft® Office Specialist training modules. You are invited to complete a prescriptive online pathway that will help you learn and develop the skills needed to be competitive in the current job market. This training allows you to learn and practice at your own pace asynchronously and autonomously.

The training is free of charge for Rotman Commerce and Rotman School of Management Students by Invitation Only.

The Microsoft Office Suite is an essential workplace readiness skill in consistently high demand in the labour market. Additionally, in a Microsoft Certified Professional survey, 91% of hiring managers said they consider employee certification as a criterion for hiring.

The Jasperactive training modules are comprised of In-App and Interactive exercises. In-App exercises are completed in the application. Interactive exercises are click-through, interactive exercises that mimic the real commands in the Microsoft program suite.

Learning Pathway

Jasperactive for Microsoft Office’s five-step learning pathway builds experience and knowledge through hands-on activities and exploration.

Benchmark

The Benchmark test determines skill levels and builds a prescribed course plan using only the specific lessons required.

Learn

CCI Learning’s award-winning courseware comes to life in live-in-app exercises, beginning with quick quizzes as a check to make sure prescribed learning is accurate. Exercises are fully hands-on!

Practice

A chance to repeat exercises to perfect Microsoft Office skills.

Create

A project-based exercise to combine skills and creativity. Standalone documents are uploaded and scanned by Jasperactive to check for appropriate functionality use.

Validate

After learning, Jasperactive provides a practice exam to validate learning and to measure Microsoft Office Specialist certification readiness.

Training Programs List

Microsoft® Office Specialist - Excel Associate (30-50 hours)

Microsoft® Excel Associate teaches the skills necessary to create and edit professional-looking spreadsheets for a variety of purposes and situations using locally installed MS Excel.

    • Manage worksheets and workbooks
    • Manage data cells and ranges
    • Manage tables and table data
    • Perform operations by using formulas and functions
    • Create charts and objects

Microsoft® Office Specialist - Excel Expert (25-35 hours)

Microsoft® Excel Expert teaches students how to use a variety of intermediate and advanced features to consolidate data, perform data analysis, and audit formulas in spreadsheets. Students also use summary functions, create pivot tables and pivot charts, and work with macros using locally installed MS Excel.

Microsoft® Office Specialist - Word Associate (30-45 hours)

Microsoft® Word Associate teaches the information worker how to use core skills to work with business documents such as letters, forms, and newsletters. The user will acquire fundamental concepts and skills, building on this foundation as they continue to increase their productivity to apply creative features and
enhance various documents

Microsoft® Office Specialist - Word Expert (25-45 hours)

Microsoft® Word Expert teaches students how to use a variety of intermediate and advanced features to create and format business documents including online forms and personalized mailings. Students also learn to collaborate with other users, create online forms, work with templates, and apply advanced formatting options.

Microsoft® Office Specialist - Access (36-60 hours)

Microsoft® Access teaches students how to design, create, and manage databases. Students will design tables, select appropriate data types, and create logical relationships. They will also create and manage queries, forms, and reports, and will use techniques to streamline data entry, maintain data. integrity,
and analyze data

Microsoft® Office Specialist - Outlook (15-20 hours)

Microsoft® Outlook teaches the information worker how to use the various elements such as Mail, Calendar and Contacts to coordinate communication and collaboration with others. The user will acquire fundamental concepts and skills, building on this foundation as they increase their productivity in communication and sharing information with others.

Microsoft® Office Specialist - PowerPoint (20-25 hours)

Microsoft® PowerPoint teaches the information worker how to create and manage presentations using a variety of core and intermediate features. Some topics may appear to be basic skill sets but are discussed in more detail, exploring at a higher level different options that can be chosen or applied for that
skill set.

Certification exams may be scheduled on an on-demand only basis and will take place in the Rotman FRT-Lab after you complete the training module. You will be required to book an exam by emailing the FRT-Lab at financelab@rotman.utoronto.ca with your availabilities and are expected to cover the certification fee.  

Eligibility

Access to the Jasperactive training platform will be provided free of charge to each student for a period of 3 months only. You are expected to complete your chosen training module(s) within the three-month period.  You may request to sit the certification exam(s) by emailing financelab@rotman.utoronto.ca. Please note that although the training is free, the user must cover the certification fee.

The training is available to current Rotman School of Management and Rotman Commerce students (all years).

Next steps

After your account and activation process is done, you are ready to begin learning. When you have completed a Jasperactive course, you will be well-equipped to pass the official certification exam. Keep in mind that in Jasperactive, certain tasks must be performed before other tasks. The established order is as follows:

  1. Download and Install Jasperactive on Windows OS via this link.

  3. For MacOS users, you can access Jasperactive MOS online via this link.
  4. Log in to your student account via this link.
  5. Read the user guide Jasperactive Student User Guide.
  6. Take the benchmark test Using the Course Benchmark.
  7. Start your training modules.
  8. Take the Lesson Quiz.
  9. Perform the Learn Exercises (these exercises are required).
  10. Perform any required Practice Exercises (some are optional).
  11. Submit a Created project.
  12. Opt to take the certification exam (user pays and booking is required at financelab@rotman.utoronto.ca).

Co-Curricular Record (CCR)

Once you have completed a module (i.e. Word or Excel), you may claim for a CCR.

The Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is designed to help students find opportunities at U of T beyond the classroom and to have their skills and experiences captured on an official document.
