CliftonStrengths & CareerLeader Assessment Codes

Becoming more self-aware of your interests, motivations, and strengths may enable you to have a clearer understanding of the steps you need to take as you plan and prepare for a meaningful career. To help build upon your self-awareness, Career Services recommends that you complete the CliftonStrengths and CareerLeader self-assessments before you meet with your Career Coach.

The CliftonStrengths assessment uncovers which talents you rely on to build relationships, think strategically, execute plans and influence others to accomplish goals. Knowing your unique set of talents, you’re empowered to succeed by doing what you naturally do best.

The CareerLeader assessment was created at Harvard Business School and designed specifically for business students and professionals. This tool is useful because it will provide you with insight into your skills, motivators and interests, and measures how similarly you answer a set of questions to groups of professionals who are happily employed in their fields.

Please refer to the email sent to you from Career Services on June 7th with assessment instructions. If you did not receive one, email Career Services directly at career.services@rotman.utoronto.ca

Join us at our upcoming Career Discovery Series workshops this summer!

Join us at our upcoming Career Discovery Series workshops this summer! The Career Discovery Series (CDS) is a 3-part series of workshops that will help set you up for success in your career journey at Rotman and beyond. As the MBA program ramps up quickly, your attendance at all three sessions is extremely important. These sessions will provide you with a baseline of information needed to prepare you for your career management activities before the program begins.

If you missed the first session that was held earlier this week or would like to revisit the information covered, you can find the recorded sections of this session in the Career Services section of the Pre-Program Portal. The Personal Career Map, Job Search Strategy Assessment Wheel, and Career Readiness Checklist are also available for download in the Quick Links.

If you haven’t yet registered for our next series of workshops taking place virtually on Wednesday, July 12th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ET, please register via the Zoom link that was included in your designated Career Coach’s introduction email.

During this three-hour session, your Career Coach will take you through cover letter and resume best practices to help you prepare strong application documents. The MBA program kicks into high gear quickly from orientation onwards so it’s beneficial for you to learn these important tactics early on as these application documents are often challenging to compose.

If you have any questions, please email your Career Coach directly.

Personal Branding – Managing Your Image webinar

Get a head start on your Rotman Journey!

Are you unsure about what to wear when a professional event stipulates ‘casual’ dress?  Do you wonder what type of first impression you may give off during upcoming coffee chats, recruiting events, and interviews?

Join us for our Webinar!

Hello Rotman MBA Class of 2020,

Whether we like it or not, first impressions are made in part by how we dress and present ourselves, and it is difficult to change a first impression. Many of you are taking the MBA to switch careers and may not be fully aware of how to dress the part for this new role. During separate webinar sessions for women and men, we will share candid insight on how to dress your best, whether it’s business formal or casual attire. Facilitated by Career Coaches from the Career Centre, the 1 hour session will include employer feedback and useful tips to ensure the way you are perceived is reflective of the brand you seek to portray.

So…are you in?

Career Centre: Resume and Interview Workshops

1. Mock Interview Program

Visit RCareer today to sign-up for a 30-minute timeslot in January:

  • Wed Jan 17th (9 to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm)
  • Wed Jan 24th (9 to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm)
  • Wed Jan 31st (9 to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm

2. Video Interview & Creating Your Video Introduction with Ross MacPherson

January 16th, 3:30 to 6 pm – RSVP in RCareer!

FACT: In today’s job market, many companies are using video interviewing platforms as part of their recruiting process (eg. EY Canada, Scotiabank, RBC, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Tim Hortons, and many others). In addition, they’re not just using video at the interview stage…they’re now using video at the application stage and applying cognitive assessment software on the back-end to analyze your responses. It’s a game changer and requires specific insight and specific strategies to win.

We’ve invited two experts, Catharine Fennell, CEO of videoBIO and branding expert Ross Macpherson, President of Career Quest, to help you become “video ready” whether for a video interview OR in creating your individual video bio (an introduction you can use in your networking efforts and a complement to your resume that may be used by the Career Centre to highlight you to employers).

3. Two Hour Jobs Search (Part 2)

January 15th, 6 to 8 pm in the Desautels Hall

Forbes Magazine described the 2-Hour Job Search as “one of the best books to boost your career”.

Hiring managers increasingly rely on referrals to avoid reviewing hundreds of resumes per posting. However, job seekers crave the perceived efficiency that an online jobsite offers, pouring countless hours into an inherently ineffective approach.

The 2-Hour Job Search workshop offers step-by-step, time-limited instructions for the most frustrating part of finding work — getting a first interview. This science-based process splits the job search into manageable pieces, using tools like Excel, LinkedIn and Google, each requiring at most 15 minutes, to help those looking for work conduct the best job search possible.

Steve Dalton is a senior career consultant and Associate Director at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He holds his own MBA from the same institution and a chemical engineering degree from Case Western Reserve University. Prior to entering the career services industry, Dalton was an associate marketing manager at General Mills and a strategy consultant at A.T. Kearney.

You can access the 2-Hour Job Search book through Rotman’s Business Information Centre (BIC) or through Amazon, or download.

3. MBA Resume Rehab: Beyond the 1 Page Rotman Resume

January 29th, 3:30 to 6 pm – RSVP in RCareer!

In today’s job market, a good resume simply isn’t good enough…it has to be a powerful marketing tool that allows you to stand out among your toughest competition and showcases your value to an employer.

In this jam-packed working session, you will learn the latest advanced resume strategies from one of North America’s top resume writers, Ross Macpherson, who has helped thousands of MBA graduates, industry leaders and executives across the U.S., Canada and internationally. Prepare to take notes – this is NOT your average resume session!

Participants will learn:

  • How to construct a Profile or Summary section that positions you for the role in a matter of seconds!
  • How to write powerful content that sells your value, not just your experience
  • The 3 different types of accomplishment statements (yes, there are 3)
