Leveraging Diverse Teams Course: Social Style Analysis

“Dear Class of 2020,

One of the goals of LDT is to help you gain insight into your personal style of interacting with other people so that you can be a more effective team member. To learn more about your interaction style, you will be completing a Social Style and Versatility Assessment. Students over many years have found this exercise insightful and of great personal benefit. To that end, we are asking that you complete the assessment by August 15th so that we can debrief the results during class the week of August 20th.

Next week (week of July 16th), you’ll be receiving instructions about how to complete this assessment. Please keep an eye out for two emails: one email from your course instructors with details about what the assessment involves and an email from Tracom Learning, the company that administers this assessment. The instructions will also be posted on the pre-program portal, but please add our email addresses, as well as admin@maxproddata1.tracom.com, to your “safe senders” list to ensure they don’t wind up in your Junk Folder. We look forward to seeing you soon at Rotman!”

Personal Branding – Managing Your Image webinar

Get a head start on your Rotman Journey!

Join us for our Webinar!

Hello Rotman MBA Class of 2020,

Whether we like it or not, first impressions are made in part by how we dress and present ourselves, and it is difficult to change a first impression. Many of you are taking the MBA to switch careers and may not be fully aware of how to dress the part for this new role. During separate webinar sessions for women and men, we will share candid insight on how to dress your best, whether it’s business formal or casual attire. Facilitated by Career Coaches from the Career Centre, the 1 hour session will include employer feedback and useful tips to ensure the way you are perceived is reflective of the brand you seek to portray.

So…are you in?

University Accessibility Services

If you have a physical, learning or mental disability, you may want to register with Accessibility Services for academic accommodations. Students may register as soon as they have accepted their offer of admission, and are encouraged to do so early, prior to the beginning of the year.

Academic accommodations support your ability to participate fully in the academic environment in a positive way that is responsive to your learning. Academic accommodations are based upon available documentation outlining your functional limitations, provincial best practices, the student’s past educational experiences and current needs, as applied to the academic demands of your program.

Academic accommodations do not exempt you from meeting course and program standards.

Get Your Finances in Order

Check out the following financing options, and submit an application to all the options for which you are eligible.

  1. Canadian government student loans for:
    1. Ontario residents – Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are also residents of Ontario can now submit OSAP applications for the 2018-19 academic year. The 2018-19 Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) application is now available at https://www.ontario.ca/page/osap-ontario-student-assistance-program
    2. Residents from other provinces – Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are residents of other provinces are also eligible to apply for government student financial assistance. Students from other provinces apply through their home province. For a list of each Provincial Loan Program please visit the University of Toronto’s Enrolment Services website at http://www.future.utoronto.ca/finances/financial-aid/osap-and-other-government-aid
  1. Loans for US citizens/permanent residents – American citizens or permanent residents who would like to apply for alternative/private US loans to fund their MBA program at Rotman can get more information at this University of Toronto website: http://www.future.utoronto.ca/finances/financial-aid/other-loans-and-student-lines-credit
  1. Professional Student Loan Plans – Both Canadian citizens/permanent residents and international students can apply for student lines of credit with the Bank of Montreal or the Royal Bank of Canada. Detailed information as well as the application process for PSLP loans can be found on RWorld, in the Financial Aid & Scholarships section.
  1. Check out this list of funding options by country.

To help you determine your expenses (tuition and living), and the funds you already have in place to cover these expenses, use the Financial Guarantee & Support Statement (FGSS) as your budgeting tool. It will help you figure out any shortfall that you may have, which will allow you to brainstorm other sources of funding that you can tap into.

A paper version of the FGSS was included in the Financing Your MBA document in your admission offer package. A fillable PDF is also available on RWorld in the Forms section.

Once you have completed your FGSS, submit it to the Program Services Office. It will be reviewed, and you will be contacted if there are any questions regarding your funding and expenses.

Deadline to submit the FGSS is Monday, July 9, 2018.

Summer nights in Toronto: Movies under the stars

It’s May 16th, and I’m already thinking about the summer ahead. The weather is getting warmer, the city is opening its patio doors, and Torontonians are looking forward to being outdoors after a long winter of hibernation.

Most nights of the week, it’s possible to pack a blanket (I recommend a pillow to sit on if chairs aren’t provided), a snack (I recommend a full picnic), and settle in for an evening of (mostly FREE) entertainment. Parks and venues all over the city offer free outdoor movie nights from June through August, so choose a flick, and head on over.

Christie Pits is the park closest to Rotman, and my favourite. There is a Baskin Robbins/Kernels across the street from the park too, in case you feel like some popcorn or ice cream during/before/after the movie (or all three — I don’t judge).

There is also a sail-in movie night. You know, for those of us with yachts and sailboats. (P.S. If you have a yacht hit the Recruitment team up, because that sounds like a great… team building activity.)

For a list of locations, check out this link: https://www.blogto.com/film/2018/05/free-movie-toronto-outdoor-picture-show/

Career Centre: Resume and Interview Workshops

1. Mock Interview Program

Visit RCareer today to sign-up for a 30-minute timeslot in January:

  • Wed Jan 17th (9 to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm)
  • Wed Jan 24th (9 to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm)
  • Wed Jan 31st (9 to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm

2. Video Interview & Creating Your Video Introduction with Ross MacPherson

January 16th, 3:30 to 6 pm – RSVP in RCareer!

FACT: In today’s job market, many companies are using video interviewing platforms as part of their recruiting process (eg. EY Canada, Scotiabank, RBC, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Tim Hortons, and many others). In addition, they’re not just using video at the interview stage…they’re now using video at the application stage and applying cognitive assessment software on the back-end to analyze your responses. It’s a game changer and requires specific insight and specific strategies to win.

We’ve invited two experts, Catharine Fennell, CEO of videoBIO and branding expert Ross Macpherson, President of Career Quest, to help you become “video ready” whether for a video interview OR in creating your individual video bio (an introduction you can use in your networking efforts and a complement to your resume that may be used by the Career Centre to highlight you to employers).

3. Two Hour Jobs Search (Part 2)

January 15th, 6 to 8 pm in the Desautels Hall

Forbes Magazine described the 2-Hour Job Search as “one of the best books to boost your career”.

Hiring managers increasingly rely on referrals to avoid reviewing hundreds of resumes per posting. However, job seekers crave the perceived efficiency that an online jobsite offers, pouring countless hours into an inherently ineffective approach.

The 2-Hour Job Search workshop offers step-by-step, time-limited instructions for the most frustrating part of finding work — getting a first interview. This science-based process splits the job search into manageable pieces, using tools like Excel, LinkedIn and Google, each requiring at most 15 minutes, to help those looking for work conduct the best job search possible.

Steve Dalton is a senior career consultant and Associate Director at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He holds his own MBA from the same institution and a chemical engineering degree from Case Western Reserve University. Prior to entering the career services industry, Dalton was an associate marketing manager at General Mills and a strategy consultant at A.T. Kearney.

You can access the 2-Hour Job Search book through Rotman’s Business Information Centre (BIC) or through Amazon, or download.
