To Cancel or Not to Cancel Your GMAT Score…That is the question!

Lynda PatersonAs many of you are likely aware, GMAC announced as of June 27, 2014, test takers have the option to cancel their scores.  The question is, is this a good idea?

Our response…don’t cancel your score!  You may not be happy with your score, but chances are you are going to retake the test to be more competitive for admission or of hopes of getting a scholarship.  Rotman does not look down upon candidates that have taken the GMAT multiple times, we will always use the highest score. Allowing us to see your previous test scores gives us an idea of the type of candidate you are, as it shows us your hustle, determination and drive to improve.  These are qualities that we look for in candidates.  The GMAT score doesn’t weigh more than any other aspect of your application- and showing dedication to improve your score is a good thing!

But what happens if you do indeed decide to cancel your score? A “C” will be placed on your score report indicating that you cancelled the score of that GMAT exam. If you choose to take the GMAT exam again and send your scores to a school, your score report will include any/all scores you have received within the last 5 years and will include that “C” in place of any scores you have cancelled. Therefore schools will know if you have cancelled but won’t know how you’ve improved since the last time you wrote. You also won’t get a detailed report of how you performed since the last time you wrote which could otherwise be very useful in preparing for your next GMAT test.

In summary, there is no downside to keeping your GMAT score:

  • You can demonstrate to a school how you improved your score over time.
  • You have a reference point for what score you would like to improve over from the last time you wrote.
  • Even if your score isn’t as strong when you rewrite, it doesn’t matter as we take your best score in evaluating your profile!

So keep those GMAT scores! 🙂

Recap: January 7th Deadline at Rotman

Lynda PatersonWhat an exciting time! The 2nd application deadline, January 7th, has passed and we are now compiling the hundreds of applications that were submitted!

We have received numerous enquires about what happens when supporting documents did not arrive by the January 7th deadline. Does that mean you will be evaluated as part of Round 3? No!

If you submitted the online application by the 7th but one or more of the supporting documents — such as GMAT, TOEFL, transcript or references — remain outstanding we will still review your application as soon as we receive everything. In short, we won’t wait until Round 3 to review your file. We can’t guarantee an admissions decision by March 8th, as promised for those of you whose applications were complete by January 7th , but you will still hear from us sooner than if you had applied for Round 3.

What’s Next?

When your application is complete you will receive an email from us indicating that your application is ready for review. Since applications are reviewed in sequence of submission, it may be a number of weeks after that before you hear from us about whether or not you are invited for an interview.

Now that you have submitted your application and you are waiting to hear from us, we encourage you to reach out to our student ambassadors to get a better understanding of the Rotman community and what it is like to be a student in the best MBA program in Canada! There are many ways to get connected with Rotman:

Remember we are always here to help so feel free to contact us should you have any questions about the status of your application!
