Instructor Bio


Four of us co-designed the OnBoard Fellowship Program about ten years ago. I am glad to facilitate the fellowship this year. I earned my doctorate in organizational behaviour from the University of Toronto. I am currently at the Institute for Management and Innovation at the Mississauga campus, as the Director of ICUBE, one of the campus accelerators.

I teach a variety of graduate courses such as Change Management, Leadership for a Sustainable World, and Social Entrepreneurship at UTM. My most recent publication is ‘Some Counsel to Doctoral Students from a Naïve and Shell-shocked Academic’, in Robinson, S., Bristow, A. and Ratle, O. (2024). (eds.) Doing Academic Careers Differently: Portraits of Academic Life, Oxford: Routledge. I am now collaborating on a book project to examine patriarchy in academia. I am also a certified LEGO serious play facilitator!

Target Audience


Students who are interested in the practices of good governance, their challenges, and innovative ways to address them will enjoy the course. Students who value the non-profit sector and would like to work on a substantive project with real outcomes will enjoy the course.

Format


We will meet approximately once a month across both terms. The course is offered online.

Course Mission

  1. Develop a rich understanding of the non-profit sector, its practices, people, and processes.
  2. Understand the role and importance of boards in shaping the activities of non-profit organizations.
  3. Analyze the designs for and processes of ‘good’ governance.
  4. Create a shared community of knowledge between the non-profit boards and the Rotman School.

Course Scope


The course matches talented second-year MBA candidates with Ontario-based non-profit boards (and charities) for eight-month fellowships. Fellows support the boards, their committees and management by working on governance projects or strategic projects of interest to the board. Rotman OnBoard provides an innovative way for resource-constrained organizations to access valuable business skills in accounting, consulting, finance, marketing, HR, and other functional areas from some of Canada’s top MBA talent.

The key goal of the program is to develop students’ governance knowledge and leadership skills while they contribute their time and talent to non-profit organizations. It also allows students from three programs – MBA, JDMBA, and JD – to come together during our class sessions to learn from one another.

Required Resources


Most of the resources will be materials readily available from the University of Toronto library system.

Experiential Course Limit


There are limits to the number of RSM27XX range courses that students may take for credit toward their degree. Please refer to the Global/Experiential Course Eligibility Specifics and Limits section on the RO website for all details.

Students may take only one (0.5 FCE) of RSM2702H – Rotman OnBoard, RSM2703H – CityLab, or RSM2706H – Impact Investing for credit.
