General Information
There are no additional tuition fees for overload, EXTra, and/or audit course requests, provided degree requirements have not yet been met.
All electives, including global and experiential opportunities, are eligible for overload and EXTra requests. Typically only lecture-style electives are eligible for audit requests.
Application Information
Students wishing to submit an overload, EXTra, and/or audit course request must complete the appropriate form (see below) and submit it to the Registrar’s Office. Requests may only be submitted as of the first day of Add/Drop Phase Two, and at any time up to the final Add/Drop deadline of the related term.
Requests will be reviewed as of the start of the term in question, and will be reviewed in the order they have been received. Requests will only be reviewed should the minimum GPA requirement be met (for overload and EXTra requests), and should there be space in the requested course (including no wait list). Space can be confirmed on the Add/Drop site.
Students with valid requests will be notified of a decision prior to the start of the requested course.

- Audit requests also require instructor approval via signature or e-mail
Overloading
Overloading is applicable to students in the Full-Time-MBA and Morning & Evening MBA only.
During the electives phase of the program, students are permitted to overload (i.e. enroll in one additional course above the normal course load per term) provided there is space available in the course, and they meet the GPA requirement of 3.2.
Additional things to note:
- An overload may also be considered an EXTra course
- Students are permitted to overload one course per term
- Overload requests are not permitted during the Winter Intensive or Summer Intensive Terms, or concurrently alongside intensive format courses
- Additionally, Full-Time MBA students are not permitted to overload during Term 4 or during an Internship (FIP) term
- Overloading can be quite demanding, and students should keep drop deadline dates in mind; Academic Accommodations will not be considered for overload courses
- If an overload course accelerates the completion of a student’s program requirements, they will be put forward for graduation immediately following the term in which those requirements have been met; see Accelerating Program for details
EXTra Courses
EXTra courses are applicable to all MBA students and MFin students, and do not count towards the degree.
During the electives phase of the program, students are permitted to take additional courses (i.e. exceed the number of elective courses required for their MBA degree), provided there is space available in the course, and they meet the GPA requirement of 3.2.
Students who complete their degree requirements ahead of schedule will not be permitted to take EXTra courses.
Additional things to note:
- Students are permitted to take one EXTra course per term
- MMA and MFRM programs are not eligible to take EXTra courses
- EXTra courses are subject to the same regulations as courses taken for degree credit
- All coursework is expected to be completed, and a final grade will be assigned
- The course will be noted as “EXT” on the transcript
- The course will not be included in the GPA calculation
- Withdrawal deadlines and failure (FZ) guidelines apply
- See section 6.2.6 Extra Courses Not Required for the Degree on the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) website for more details
- All coursework is expected to be completed, and a final grade will be assigned
- EXTra courses cannot be converted to credit courses (or vice versa) after final Add/Drop deadline of the related term. Similarly, retroactive attendance status (CREdit/EXTra) for previous terms cannot be made.
- EXTra courses may be transferred to other graduate degrees
Auditing
MBA students may audit a course provided there is space available in the course, and the consent of the instructor has been obtained.
Auditing permits attendance at classes only, and a minimum of 70% of lectures must be attended. No work will be evaluated, and no record will be kept on the academic transcript.
Additional things to note:
- Students are permitted to audit one course per term
- Students are not able to take any courses for credit that they have previously audited
- Audit requests are reviewed after all requests for a course to be taken for degree credit or for a final grade (i.e. after overload and EXTra course requests) have been reviewed
Note: Due to limited availability, auditing is open only to Rotman current students and alumni. Alumni should note that the alumni auditing process is managed by both Alumni Relations and the Registrar’s Office. Alumni Relations will send out approved auditing schedules, along with an alumni-specific application form and process when they are made available each term. Alumni interested in auditing Rotman courses should reach out to Alumni Relations (alumni@rotman.utoronto.ca).
