Instructor Bio


Alexandre Corhay is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Rotman School of Management. His research focuses on understanding how major macroeconomic factors—such as inflation, monetary policy, and product market competition—influence corporate decision-making and asset prices. Alex’s work has been published in leading finance journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Economic Studies. He has received multiple teaching awards at both Rotman and the University of British Columbia. His research has been presented at numerous academic conferences and influential policy institutions, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of Canada, and various central banks within the European Monetary System.

It provides a robust foundation for those planning careers in the investment management industry, as well as for individuals with a strong personal interest in investing. Course Mission


This course builds upon concepts introduced in RSM1231, focusing on the principles and techniques underlying the construction and management of modern investment portfolios. It emphasizes the objectives, strategies, and risk-return trade-offs appropriate for various types of investors. Students will explore essential aspects of the investment management process, including the formulation of investment policies, portfolio implementation, and performance evaluation. The course also examines how recent macroeconomic factors, such as inflation, government policies, and the increasing emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations, influence contemporary portfolio management practices.

Course Scope


Through a combination of lectures, readings, case discussions, and guest speaker sessions, students will explore key aspects of the practical implementation of asset allocation, security selection, and style investing. They will gain real-world market experience by applying their knowledge and judgment to manage a portfolio using the Rotman Portfolio Management System (RPM).
