Below are examples of behavioural interview questions, grouped under 16 key employment characteristics. The primary framework for answering these questions is SAR (Situation, Action and Result). We recommend that you think of at least two situations for each question, as recruiters sometimes ask for multiple examples.
Please note that the sample questions below may fall into more than one group.

b) Tell us about a time when you had to meet a very tight deadline and how you handled it.
c) Tell us about a time when you had too many things to do and you had to prioritize your tasks.
d) Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation and you demonstrated your coping skills.
e) Give me an example of a time when you were able to meet the personal and professional (or academic) demands in your life yet still maintained a healthy balance.
f) Our department is fast-paced. What experience do you have with working in a fast-paced environment? Do you anticipate any difficulties?
g) Describe a situation that demonstrates your ability to work under pressure.
h) Tell us about a time when you failed to meet a deadline.
i) Please share an example of how you asserted yourself in a high-pressure situation or an emergency.
j) Your supervisor has given you a rush assignment. The timing conflicts with that of another assignment given to you by your supervisor’s boss. How will you handle these assignments?
a) Tell us about a time when you were asked to execute a project or prepare a report but you were not given enough time or resources.
b) Describe a politically sensitive situation that you were in and how you handled it.

a) Describe a time when you were in crisis. What was your role in it, and what did you do?
b) Tell me about a bad decision you made and what you learned from it.
c) Give me an example of a time when you had to make a split-second decision. Were you content or disappointed with the end result? How comfortable are you with making such quick decisions?
d) Tell me about a time when you were forced to make an unpopular decision. How did you overcome this?
e) Tell me about the most challenging problem you have faced in the last year.
f) Tell me about a time when you missed an obvious solution to a problem.
g) Describe a time when you anticipated potential problems and developed preventive measures.
h) Give me an example of a time when you used your fact-finding skills to solve a problem.
i) We can sometimes identify a small problem and fix it before it becomes a major problem. Give an example of a time when you did this.
j) Recall a time from your work experience when your manager or supervisor was unavailable and a problem arose. What was the nature of the problem? How did you handle that situation? How did that make you feel?
k) Give us an example of your ability to make decisions under pressure.

i) Tell me about a time when you worked with a colleague who was not doing his or her share. Who, if anyone, did you talk to about it? What steps, if any, were taken to correct your colleague? What was your role in this?
j) In a supervisory or group leader role, have you ever had to discipline or counsel an employee or a group member? If so, how did you prepare yourself? What steps did you take? How did that make you feel?
k) Some people work best as part of a group; others prefer to work on their own. How would you describe yourself?
l) Describe a situation in which you were required to work with people at various levels within your organization. How did you work effectively with these people?
